Although commonly occurring due to aging, drooping eyelids, or ptosis, is a condition not just experienced by adults, but also affects children. Besides affecting your vision, drooping eyelids are unattractive and may therefore impact your self-esteem. If you or a dear one suffers from ptosis in Peoria, contact board-certified oculofacial plastic and cosmetic surgeon Dustin Heringer, MD for precise diagnosis and treatment. The doctor leads his expert team at Arizona Ocular & Facial Plastic Surgery in conducting ptosis repair as an outpatient procedure for both men and women. Are you ready to regain your vision and confidence? Schedule your appointment with the professionals today.

What is ptosis?

Commonly known as drooping eyelids, ptosis is a condition that is likely to occur as you get older. That notwithstanding, sometimes ptosis is present at birth and may affect one or both eyes. Ptosis is commonly caused by the weakening or the stretching of the levator muscle, occurring as people grow older. Additionally, cataract surgery, eye surgery, or eye injuries may also cause ptosis. Other causes include neurological disorders, diabetes, and eye tumors.

What can I expect during a ptosis procedure?

During your treatment at Arizona Ocular & Facial Plastic Surgery, Dr. Heringer uses monitored anesthesia to address drooping eyelids. Ptosis surgery can be conducted externally or internally, depending on your drooping eyelids’ complexity.

The external approach involves an incision made on your natural upper eyelid crease for accessing the levator muscle. In case of an internal procedure, the lid is averted, creating an incision to allow access to the Mueller’s muscle.

For both cases, a suture is used to tighten the muscles, with the incisions being closed with temporary sutures. You are likely to experience blurry distance vision for almost two weeks and blurry near vision for close to a month after your procedure.

You will be unable to wear your contacts for two to three weeks after your ptosis treatment. Plus, you will need to apply eye drops for lubrication during your recovery period. If your vision slightly changes due to ptosis surgery, Dr. Heringer recommends that you wait three to four months before consulting your eye doctor for a new contacts or glasses prescription to let your eyes heal completely.

Other Services

Besides ptosis, you can benefit from other quality treatment available at Arizona Ocular & Facial Plastic Surgery. Contact Dr. Heringer and his team for:

  • Facelift
  • Blepharoplasty
  • Brow lift
  • Neck lift

Acid reflux disorder occurs when acidic fluids in your stomach rise through your esophageal. At the point where the esophageal and the stomach meet, there is a valve called the lower esophageal sphincter (LES). After you eat, the lower esophageal sphincter should close to prevent those food and other digestive juices from moving up into your esophageal. Acid reflux can cause ulcers, bad breath, heartburn, and chest discomfort. When acid reflux persists, you can develop a condition known as gastroesophageal reflux disease. Dr. Bharat Pothuri is a specialist who can diagnose and treat acid reflux disorder. Below are the causes of acid reflux disease.

The primary causes of acid reflux disorder

There are many causes of acidic reflux, which varies from person to person. However, there are other factors such as diseases, medications, and body conditions that can lead to acid reflux. The primary cause of gastroesophageal reflux disease is a condition known as hiatal hernia. A hiatal hernia occurs when the part of your stomach and lower esophageal sphincter moves above the diaphragm. When they go above the diaphragm, the acidic fluids in your stomach spill out through the food pipe, causing GERD. Other causes of acid reflux include;

·       Eating large meals. When you eat a lot of food, your stomach becomes full, making the food push the valve up. When the valve opens, food and digestive juices move up via the food pipe.

·       Medication. Some medicines may weaken the valve muscles making them lose strength. Some examples of medication include aspirin, ibuprofen, and blood pressure medication.

·       Diseases. Digestive complications can cause acid reflux disorder.

·       Eating citrus and spicy food. Spicy food such as garlic, onions, and chocolate may cause acid reflux. Some fruits like berries and oranges can also cause acid reflux.

·       Drinking beverages. Soft drinks, juices, coffee, and alcohol cause acid reflux.

Below is how acid reflux is diagnosed.

Diagnosis of acid reflux

When you experience heartburn and fluid movement from the stomach to esophageal two or more times a week, it is vital to seek medical attention. Diagnosis includes;

·       Esophageal check-up. Your doctor will check how your esophageal, valve, and stomach are performing.

·       Barium swallow. Your doctor can check the narrowness of your esophageal. You will be requested to swallow food, and using an x-ray, the doctor will monitor the dropping of the food.

·        Digestive diseases. Using x-ray and other tests, your doctor checks the presence of ulcers and stomach worms. Additionally, worms can cause acid reflux.

·       PH monitoring. Your doctor inserts a device into your esophageal to check the pH level. If the level of your acid is more than the base, you are likely to suffer from acid reflux. You may be recommended to avoid eating acidic foods and … Read More...

Skin cancer is the main type of cancer affecting people globally. Skin cancer is an unusual growth of cancerous skin cells that usually develop when the skin is exposed to direct sunlight. You can get skin cancer screenings in Fort Worth with certified dermatologists. This form of cancer can also occur in areas not exposed to sunlight.

Categories of skin cancer

Keratinocyte carcinoma

Basal and squamous cell skin cancer is in this category, and they are the most common forms of skin cancer. They mostly develop on areas of the body getting sun the most, like your neck and head. They are not likely to spread to other parts of the body and become more life-threatening than other forms of skin cancer. If they are not treated, they might spread to other parts and even grow larger.

Melanoma

Melanoma is cancer that develops from cells that give color to your skin. The cells are known as melanocytes. They develop anywhere in the body. In women, the moles develop on the legs mostly, while in men, they develop on the back and chest.

Melanomas may be cured if treated early. If they are left untreated, they spread fast to other parts of the body, becoming hard to treat. Melanomas spread faster than squamous and basal cell skin cancers.

Causes of skin cancer

The two types of skin cancer occur when changes develop in the skin cells’ DNA. These changes make skin cells grow uncontrollably and form several cancer cells.

Basal cell skin cancer develops from ultraviolet rays from tanning beds or the sun. Ultraviolet rays may damage the DNA in the skin cells, causing unusual cell growth.

Squamous cell skin cancer might develop after exposure to cancer-causing chemicals for a long time. It can also develop within an ulcer or burn scar and can be caused by human papillomavirus (HPV). What causes melanoma is not yet known.

Risk factors

Fair skin. Anyone can get skin cancer. Having less melanin in the skin gives less protection from ultraviolet radiation. If you have red or blonde hair and light-colored eyes, you are more likely to get skin cancer than a darker skin person.

Excessive sun exposure. If you spend the most time in the sun, you might develop skin cancer, mostly if the skin is not covered with clothing or sunscreen. Tanning, such as exposure to tanning beds and lamps, puts you at risk.

Precancerous skin lesions. Skin lesions, also called actinic keratosis, might increase the risk of developing skin cancer. The precancerous growths appear as scaly patches that range in color. They are standard on the face, hands, and head of fair-skinned people.

Weakened immune system. People with a weak immune system are at a greater risk of having skin cancer. They include people living with HIV/AIDS and people taking immunosuppressant drugs after a transplant.

If you notice any abnormal skin lesions on your skin, contact Northstar Dermatology for an evaluation right away. Dermatologists will advise you on preventive measures you will … Read More...
