Preventative dentistry refers to the procedure of caring for your teeth to keep them healthy and prevent future complications. Prevention reduces your risk of diseases and dental problems like cancer, tooth loss, cavities, and more threats to healthy and strong teeth.

Benefits of Preventative Dentistry

Preventative measures keep you safe from preventable conditions. Caring for your oral health ensures that you can maintain healthy smiles, chewing capability, dental hygiene, and speech. Poor oral health is associated with conditions like:

  •    Cancer
  •    Diabetes
  •   Osteoporosis
  •    Heart disease
  •   Respiratory disease

Preventive dentistry maintains your oral health from now henceforth while saving your time and money that you may have to spend to reverse dental complications.

Preventive Services Offered at Nishita Gandhi, DDS

If you need preventive services for your oral health, Dr. Gandhi may help you through:

  •  Oral cancer screening. Oral cancer may slip under the radar in the early stages. For the best results, you should schedule regular oral cancer screenings at Nishita Gandhi, DDS, to pinpoint early signs of oral cancer. Dr. Gandhi checks your mouth using ultraviolet light to discover unexplained lumps, mouth sores, white and red spots in the oral cavity. Upon detecting signs of oral cancer, Dr. Gandhi offers specialized treatment and tips for managing oral cancer.
  • Dental sealants. Grooves and pits on your back molars may be hard to clean through your oral care routine, improving your chances of cavities. Dr. Gandhi coats vulnerable teeth using a tooth-colored sealant for efficient protection from tooth decay and discoloration. After drying, the sealant keeps away plaque and bacteria from reaching your enamel.
  • Smoking cessation. Tobacco improves your risk of suffering gum disease, tooth decay, oral cancer, and severe tooth discoloration. If you need to achieve and maintain a healthy smile, you may need to make lifestyle adjustments like saying NO to tobacco. Dr. Gandhi offers relevant guidance to ease your process of quitting.
  • Nightguards. Waking up with sensitive teeth, a sore jaw, morning headaches, or daytime fatigue are possible indicators that you are a nighttime teeth grinder. Dr. Gandhi offers appropriate treatment to maintain the size, shape, and length of your teeth. Nishita Gandhi, DDS uses advanced practices and equipment to prevent grinding’s long- and short-term effects.

Dr. Gandhi runs conclusive tests and diagnoses to determine your eligibility for night guards. He takes measurements and impressions to prepare custom-fit night guards. Each night guard is made of tough, durable plastic that lasts for years. Wearing your night guards offers long-term relief from a sore jaw, sensitive teeth, daytime fatigue, and morning headaches.… Read More...

Bone infection, also known as osteomyelitis, can occur when fungi or bacteria invade the bone. If you live with a severe condition like kidney failure or diabetes, you are at risk of getting a bone infection. Dr. Ashley Huddleston in Fort Worth and her team provide holistic and advanced treatment to release uncomfortable symptoms associated with bone infections.

How is osteomyelitis diagnosed?

To diagnose bone infection, the doctor reviews systems, history, and physical examination. After this, the doctor will check for signs and symptoms of bone tenderness and soft tissue redness or swelling. The doctor can also order the following tests to confirm the diagnosis:

Blood test: When testing blood, a complete blood count is taken to confirm an infection. This shows an increase in white blood cell count in the bloodstream that measures and detects inflammation in the body.

Radiographs: The tests show abnormalities in the bone including focal decreased density; this suggests bone destruction by bacteria. It can show an area where a bacterial infection traps the infected bone.

Blood culture: This is a test done to detect bacteria that escaped into the bloodstream. A blood sample is taken and kept in an environment that supports the growth of a bacteria. Allowing the growth of bacteria helps identify the infectious agent and tests with different antibiotics to get effective treatments.

How is osteomyelitis treated?

The aim of treating osteomyelitis is to remove the infection and prevent the development of chronic infection. This condition can cause permanent deformities such as chronic problems and fractures. It’s good to treat it as soon as possible. Here are some of the treatments:

Drainage: If you have an open abscess or wound, it can be drained using a procedure known as aspiration. Here, a needle is driven into the affected area, and the fluid is extracted.

Antibiotics medications: Using antibiotics is the first step in treating osteomyelitis. They help the body eliminate bacteria in the blood that can re-infect the bone. The type and dosage of antibiotics prescribed depends on the extent of infection or type of bacteria present in the bloodstream. It is significant to check the offending organism through biopsy, aspiration, and blood cultures. The idea is to make attempts in doing the procedures to determine organisms before starting the antibiotics.

Surgery: Bone infections that are well-developed are eliminated through surgical procedures, and the destroyed bone is removed. For spinal abscesses, surgery is not suitable unless there is a compression of the nerve root or spinal cord. The patient with spinal osteomyelitis is given antibiotics to kill a specific bacteria associated with the infection. After the surgery, you are given antibiotics against a particular infection and are administered during the hospital stay.

With good treatment, the outcome of osteomyelitis is usually promising. But chronic osteomyelitis can be worse, even with surgery. Sometimes amputation can be necessary because chronic osteomyelitis can be resistant to treatment. In this case, you should report to your doctor if you feel any changes in the bones, … Read More...

Although commonly occurring due to aging, drooping eyelids, or ptosis, is a condition not just experienced by adults, but also affects children. Besides affecting your vision, drooping eyelids are unattractive and may therefore impact your self-esteem. If you or a dear one suffers from ptosis in Peoria, contact board-certified oculofacial plastic and cosmetic surgeon Dustin Heringer, MD for precise diagnosis and treatment. The doctor leads his expert team at Arizona Ocular & Facial Plastic Surgery in conducting ptosis repair as an outpatient procedure for both men and women. Are you ready to regain your vision and confidence? Schedule your appointment with the professionals today.

What is ptosis?

Commonly known as drooping eyelids, ptosis is a condition that is likely to occur as you get older. That notwithstanding, sometimes ptosis is present at birth and may affect one or both eyes. Ptosis is commonly caused by the weakening or the stretching of the levator muscle, occurring as people grow older. Additionally, cataract surgery, eye surgery, or eye injuries may also cause ptosis. Other causes include neurological disorders, diabetes, and eye tumors.

What can I expect during a ptosis procedure?

During your treatment at Arizona Ocular & Facial Plastic Surgery, Dr. Heringer uses monitored anesthesia to address drooping eyelids. Ptosis surgery can be conducted externally or internally, depending on your drooping eyelids’ complexity.

The external approach involves an incision made on your natural upper eyelid crease for accessing the levator muscle. In case of an internal procedure, the lid is averted, creating an incision to allow access to the Mueller’s muscle.

For both cases, a suture is used to tighten the muscles, with the incisions being closed with temporary sutures. You are likely to experience blurry distance vision for almost two weeks and blurry near vision for close to a month after your procedure.

You will be unable to wear your contacts for two to three weeks after your ptosis treatment. Plus, you will need to apply eye drops for lubrication during your recovery period. If your vision slightly changes due to ptosis surgery, Dr. Heringer recommends that you wait three to four months before consulting your eye doctor for a new contacts or glasses prescription to let your eyes heal completely.

Other Services

Besides ptosis, you can benefit from other quality treatment available at Arizona Ocular & Facial Plastic Surgery. Contact Dr. Heringer and his team for:

  • Facelift
  • Blepharoplasty
